Like the rest of the world, Chinese cities have their fair share of beggars. What is interesting, however, is that unlike other countries that have large poor populations (like SA), China’s biggest cities do not have slums (well at least Beijing and Qingdao don’t, from what I have seen).

[…]

I know there is big push to urbanise a large portion of the population in the upcoming years. I wonder how this system will adjust to account for that?

Within the 4th Ring Road, you won’t see too many, but there are plenty of shanty-towns  visible from Line 13 and the Yizhuang line.  Remember too, that the government wanted to clean up Beijing’s image for the Olympics, so there was a lot of sweeping under the rug.

As for urbanisation, a good amount of people are flocking to second and third-tier cities because they aren’t as competitive as BJ/SH/GZ/SZ and because they don’t have to travel as far.  Remember that China has a land mass larger than the US.  Everyone may dream of living in New York, but might have to settle for Detroit.

The spherical shape reminds me of mines they have in the sea for submarines.  Are you sure it’s supposed to go on top of the bomb?  ’cuz I noticed there was an opening at the top of this blue ball(s).

 - I thought a lot of what the fuck this things in the Beijing subway was before someone told me what it was used for. Apparently if they find a bomb it is supposed to be placed on top to prevent an massive explosion. What I don’t understand is who is gonna place this 2 ton heavy thing on top of the bomb….

“Prohibition hop,” my single favorite piece of Chinglish so far, spotted in the elevator of a high end office building near Shuangjing station. May mean “Don’t jump,” but I like to think of it as a swell roaring 20s dance move. Just look how happy that guy looks!

Dude, that PVAEN is so hott.  Did you try threading the V through the A, or would that have been too much?  Wish the S and the J had something more going on.
